Adaptive performance in “soft skills” needed for remote workers

Abstract

Purpose: This article presents the perceptions of resident and non-resident professionals in Brazil about their professional performance, in relation to soft skills, in the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: This exploratory research presents subjective characteristics of professionals inserted in the labor market. The data collected with the application of a questionnaire with 283 professionals are presented and analyzed with the support of the Kiviat Diagram, which displays different variables, concomitantly, contributing to an overview of the theme. Limitation: advances in telecommuting may alter the future perception of professionals from different areas regarding the most necessary skills. Results: Oral communication and intelligence/emotional control are among the soft skills with the lowest trends among residents in Brazil, while among residents abroad, the skill with the lowest value was teamwork. Originality: study shows that, even though they are not explicitly evaluated or taught, professionals realize that these skills are present in their routines and that they are necessary in their professional life.

Andrea Justino Ribeiro Mello, Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca

Degree in Economic Sciences from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in 1997; Master in Production Engineering from PEP/COPPE/UFRJ (2001); PhD in Transport Engineering from PET/COPPE/UFRJ (2015). Professor at the Celso Suckow da Fonseca Federal Center for Technological Education (CEFET/RJ) since 2007. Worked in undergraduate courses in Production Engineering and in the Master's in Regional Development and Productive Systems.
