Vernacular artifacts for plant cultivation: a sustainable design

Abstract

Purpose: this paper aims to present vernacular artifacts produced to aid the domestic cultivation of plants and discuss its sustainability. Methodology: research using the digital universe to gather market and vernacular products for cultivation and field research through visits to the residences of people who practice some type of planting with the same objective. Research Limitation/implication: compare the product research with bibliographic research with references from social design, co-creation, sustainability, and innovation, used to support the proposal to compare homemade products with market analogs (if any) presenting as many possible justifications for the consumer's decisions to create their own products instead of buying them, representing a potential opportunity for design. Results: the creation of vernacular artifacts is independent of design quality projects. Most likely they will always exist, as interests go beyond those related to the need for a specific product. But for the designer, observing these initiatives is a way of understanding the users desires. Originality/Value of paper: presentation of  sustainability precepts of and the reuse of materials and products from the perspective of sustainable design, also the potentialities for working in this field.

Lia Paletta Benatti, Federal University of Juiz de Fora

Product Designer, graduated from the School of Design of the State University of Minas Gerais. Master in Design in the line of materials, technology and processes with research on the design of Biojewels. PhD in Design in the line of culture, management and design processes with research on the domestic cultivation of plants in urban environments. Both titles by ED-UEMG. Adjunct professor at the Institute of Arts and Design of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in the Bachelor of Design course, deputy head of the Department of Arts and Design. She works in projects and research in several areas of design with a focus on craft production, entrepreneurship and design practice.

Bárbara Sayuri Trevisan Mayeta, Federal University of Juiz de Fora

Student of Bachelor of Design at UFJF, monitors the subject of Fundamentals of Technical Drawing and researcher of Scientific Initiation with the topic of application of design for the cultivation of plants in simulated microgravity. Volunteer at the Nucleus of Virtualities and Tests (NUVEN-UFJF) operating rapid prototyping technologies.

André Carvalho Mol Silva, Federal University of Juiz de Fora

Graduated in industrial design with specialization in visual programming, postgraduate in design management in micro and small companies and master in design from the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais. Doctoral student in design also at UEMG. Effective professor at the Institute of Arts and Design at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais/Brazil.

Maria Regina Álvares Correa Dias, State University of Minas Gerais

Graduated in Industrial Design from FUMA/MG, with a master's degree in Production Engineering from UFSC and a PhD in Engineering and Knowledge Management, also from UFSC. She works as a professor at the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais-UEMG (undergraduate, masters and doctorate in Design). She was coordinator of the Graduate Program in Design-PPGD / UEMG. She worked as a designer at LBDI, in Florianópolis for eight years. Professor of projects and ergonomics at FUMA and Unisul. She participated in several Ergonomics projects at UFSC, for companies such as Alcoa (MG), Copersucar (SP) and Unilever (SP and PR).
